5 recipes that will help you maximize the health benefits of consuming lemons

Just like apples, lemon fruit has many health benefits. Here you will find what they are, and how you can maximize the health benefits of consuming lemons and its derivatives.

To maximize the health benefits of consuming lemons, you need to understand what benefits they offer. As far as scientific research goes, lemons are good for you because they are: Antiviral, antibacterial, hepatoprotective and antioxidant.

Antiviral

Lemon Juice can kill the HIV virus. Yes! A study to pinpoint the virucidal effects of lemon and lime juice in HIV virus grown in laboratory, found that a 20% concentration of lime or lemon juice reduced the pH to 2.9, inactivating 90% of the virus in 2 min; a 10% concentration (pH 3.4–3.7) inactivated up to 50% in 2 min. Because of its abilities to kill HIV virus, scientists are suggesting clinical trials be done for the intravaginal use of lime or lemon juice before sex, in order to reduce the spread of HIV.

Because of its antiviral capabilities , lemon juice is widely used to treat vomiting and diarrhoea. The citric acid or citrate molecule has been observed to keep the norovirus and the cell apart by binding itself to the norovirus capsid.

Antibacterial

Research was done to determine wether the peel of lemon homogenized in different solvents, would have any effect on the following microorganisms Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium and Micrococcus aureus. The study showed that the peel of lemon is not only an astringent but also is a good antimicrobial agent. This is an important finding as certain skin flora like Pseudomonas and Micrococcus can grow in presence of sebum, especially when it is secreted in excess, which can cause purulent skin infections.

Bactericidal activity of lemon juice and lemon derivatives was found to be effective against Vibrio cholerae, which causes cholerae disease. The Concentrated juice of lemon and essential oils inhibited V. cholerae completely at all studied dilutions and exposure times.

Hepatoprotective

An animal model study designed to investigate the effect of ethanol extract of Citrus limon (lemon) in liver damage., found that the extract normalized the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT), alanine aminotransferase (ALAT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and total and direct bilirubin. In the liver tissue, treatment significantly reduced the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), hence the lipid peroxidation, and raised the levels of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. It also improved the reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in treated rats. These results prove the effectiveness of ethanol extract of Citrus limon in protecting the liver.

Antioxidant

In a research on male mice, who were exposed to a cytotoxic agent called cyclophosphamide (CP) that induces negative changes in sperm health and viability. It was found that lemon fruit extract (LFE) advanced the degree of improvement of sperm health in testes of mice treated with LFE co-administered with CP.
